Afternoons involve debugging Kafka consumer lag, whiteboarding Kubernetes pod autoscaling policies, or refactoring MongoDB aggregation pipelines that power real-time engagement scoring. The backend serves both human users and autonomous agents making outbound decisions—latency and correctness matter equally here.

What they're looking for

  • 5+ years shipping production backend systems, with substantial Ruby on Rails and at least one of Python or React in production
  • Deep experience with document or search databases—MongoDB, ElasticSearch, or similar at scale
  • Hands-on infrastructure work: Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and cloud-native patterns on GCP or AWS
  • Track record building event-driven architectures using Kafka or equivalent streaming platforms
  • Comfort operating across the stack when needed, with strong opinions on API design and system observability
