Immigration law sits at a strange intersection: life-altering stakes for the people going through it, and a maze of outdated tools, confusing government portals, and unreliable advice for the businesses trying to serve them. As CTO of a well-established, profitable consumer platform in this space, you'll own the technical direction for products that millions of prospective Canadians rely on, from content and assessment tools to AI-assisted guidance. The stack is modern where it counts, TypeScript, Node, Next.js, Python and FastAPI on GCP, with some legacy PHP you'll be expected to sunset rather than worship. You'll inherit a functioning engineering organization and reshape it: hiring, setting standards, deciding what gets built versus bought, and making sure the AI pieces are genuinely useful rather than decorative. The role is hybrid in Canada and pays CA$275K to CA$350K.

What they're looking for

  • 5+ years in engineering leadership, including ownership of platform architecture and team-building at scale
  • Hands-on depth with TypeScript/Node.js and Python; comfort with React/Next.js on the front end and PostgreSQL for data
  • Experience running production workloads on GCP and a pragmatic track record migrating legacy PHP systems
  • Judgment about applied AI: knowing when an LLM feature helps users and when it creates liability in a legally sensitive domain
  • Ability to partner with non-technical founders and translate immigration-domain complexity into a coherent technical roadmap
