You'll spend mornings tracing why a fine-tuned model collapses on edge-case prompts, afternoons writing PyTorch kernels to squeeze another 20% throughput from training loops, and late afternoons debating whether a new attention variant is worth the implementation headache. This is unglamorous infrastructure work at the frontier—no polished demos, just reproducible experiments and code the rest of the four-person team can build on.
What they're looking for
- 1–5 years shipping ML systems in Python and PyTorch, not just training notebooks
- Solid grasp of transformer architectures and the failure modes that emerge beyond single-epoch training
- Experience debugging distributed training runs where logs are your only witness
- Comfortable reading papers and deciding within days whether an idea survives contact with your codebase
- Willing to be in a South Bay office most days, whiteboard proximity matters when the team is this small
