Your mornings start with standups across two or three squads building the visual audience builder — the surface where marketers drag fields, define segments, and push audiences to ad platforms, email tools, and SaaS apps without writing SQL. You'll spend the rest of the day in the weeds that matter: reviewing architecture proposals for query generation against customers' warehouses, unblocking engineers, calibrating roadmaps with product, and coaching senior ICs toward staff-level scope. The team you inherit ships weekly and owns some of the hardest correctness problems in the space, since a bad sync means a Fortune 500 brand emails the wrong million people. You'll run planning in Airtable, interview candidates, and still keep a finger in technical decisions — this is a player-coach seat, not a pure people-manager post.
What they're looking for
- 4-16 years in engineering with at least 2 managing teams of 5+ engineers, ideally on data infrastructure, integration, or B2B SaaS products
- Enough depth in backend or data engineering to earn credibility in design reviews — you can spot a flaky sync pattern or an unscalable query plan when you see one
- Track record shipping products where reliability and correctness are the selling point, not just velocity
- Experience hiring and growing engineers across levels, from new grads to staff engineers
- Comfort operating with real autonomy: you set the technical direction for your area, with leadership support rather than micromanagement
